When you’re at the top, you quickly learn that you’re a target.
Ballroom Brawl was a landmark event for many reasons, but for Robbie Thorpe, the reason was clear. This was the event where he announced to the wrestling world that the Thorpe Era is here.
Winning the Ballroom Brawl match and doing so in the toughest possible fashion – entering at #1 – proved to others what he already knew himself: he’s the future of Melbourne City Wrestling.
He’s already held championship gold, with a spell as Intercommonwealth Champion under his belt, and now with his Ballroom Brawl win, he can set his sights on the biggest prize – the MCW World Heavyweight Championship.
But Robbie is quickly going to learn that others may not respect his recent success, and that inadvertently puts a target on his back.
Case in point – Tommy Knight.
For Tommy, it all seemed so clear. Return to MCW; win the Brawl; become Champion. And that path seemed even more straightforward when earlier in the night at Ballroom Brawl he defeated Ricky South to claim the #20 spot in the Brawl match, giving him the best possible chance of success.
However, that all fell away when Tommy went over the top rope in the Brawl, and since the second his feet hit the ground he’s only had revenge on his mind. To him, Robbie took the chance that was destined for him, and now Robbie has to pay.
But it’s a match that’s not easy to predict. Both are big men, but both have very different styles – Robbie is more clinical in his approach, while Tommy is all strength and momentum.
While Robbie and Tommy have tangled before in the ring, with Thorpe getting the upper hand at End Game last year against Knight and Mitch Waterman, they’ve never fought one-on-one before, and to be honest, both are more complete wrestlers than they were even a few short months ago.
One is committed to starting a legacy for years to come, the other is fuelled by jealousy and revenge – whatever the reasons, it means that both are dangerous men to be facing in the ring.
This is going to be a match for the ages, and we can’t wait to see it.
