For the last 18 months, Delta has been the standard bearer for women’s wrestling across the country. But recently in MCW, she’s been focused on defending her Intercommonwealth Championship. Now a new challenger has stepped up, and it’s the other championship that Delta holds that’s the target.
When Erika Reid made her return at Fight to Survive in October last year, it ended a five-year absence from the MCW ring, and she quickly showed that despite the long stint away, the MCW faithful still loved her.
After a vicious series of matches against Aysha, Erika has shown that she’s ready to challenge for the Women’s Championship, and she’s also shown that Delta might not have it all her own way.
But while Erika is popular, Delta has connected with the crowd on a level that few others have ever reached. And with each match, she’s only getting more popular, which might put Erika into an unusual position of not being the crowd favourite when they battle.
Another potential deciding factor is Delta’s incredible strength advantage – that’s no slight on Erika, Delta has even had the strength advantage over some of her Intercommonwealth challengers.
But while you may think that Delta is the obvious choice, we don’t think it’s that simple.
Over the last 8 years, Erika Reid has shown time and time again that she’s at her best when she’s underestimated, and she’s a truly tenacious competitor.
How will Delta react when Erika shows that she won’t be easily broken? It’s unfamiliar waters for Delta, and it’ll be fascinating to see how that plays out.
Delta and Erika have never faced each other one-on-one before, so this going to be a tough bout for either woman to enter into; it all makes for a compelling Women’s Championship match.
Oh, and let’s not forget that at High Stakes, every match will have stipulations that are determined by a spin of the wheel, turning an already tough choice into a truly impossible one.
But no matter who is holding the belt after the bell rings, we think the fans are going to be the real winners here.
High Stakes takes place on Saturday 4th May from the Thornbury Theatre. (859 High Street, Thornbury VIC 3071)
