It’s often said that it’s hard to recognise an era of greatness while you’re in the middle of it; it takes time and perspective to properly put it in context. But, if you look at Adam Brooks right now, maybe we have all the evidence we need that his current Intercommonwealth Championship reign is the best we’ve ever seen.
Anniversary – he beats Robbie Thorpe to win the title.
High Stakes – he defeats Ryan Rapid.
Ballroom Brawl – he wins against Lucky O’Leary.
In August he travels to Invercargill, New Zealand for SPW Southern Rumble. There he defeats Liam Fury.
Vendetta – he triumphs over The Tuckman.
In October he goes over to Perth for EPW This is Our House, where he successfully defends the title against Robbie Thorpe, Ricky South and Tommy Knight.
In November he takes the title to Queensland for WBPW Hall Brawl, where he wins over Certified Papi.
And then to finish the year, at End Game he wins over Ricky South in an instant classic.
8 defences. 3 states. 2 countries.
What more needs to be said?
His next challenger will be JJ Furno, who secured this huge opportunity with a victory over Owen Steadman at OPW Wrestle Wave.
Furno has shown why he’s so highly regarded amongst the online critics, and he’s got the credentials to back the chatter up. He’s a 3-time PCW Ignition Champion, and the current PCW National Champion, so you can be damn sure he’ll be bringing a champion’s mentality into this match.
Perhaps more tellingly though, Furno knows that this is his opportunity to make an instant splash in MCW, by not just winning the Intercommonwealth title, but by dethroning someone who has truly been dominant.
What better way to have the Australian scene take notice than by walking out of the Thornbury Theatre carrying the IC belt?
Add in the fact that both Furno and Brooks have similar styles, and you’ve got just what you need for a hell of a match.
