Royce Chambers’ wrestling career may have only taken flight two years ago, but the Airbender has already made a name for himself in Japan, as well as here in Australia. He’s even been on the radar of another aerial assassin, Will Ospreay, who has voiced his interest in facing the Airbender.
Speaking on the MCW Wired Podcast, Chambers spoke about his breakout year in 2019 and how he was on course to reach new heights in 2020 before the pandemic.
“I got pretty depressed, because I had all this momentum and I had heaps of big plans for 2020” Chambers added.
“Since I was 17, all I did was wrestle every weekend, so to have that taken away from me, and you can’t do anything about it, was pretty tough”. He continued “I didn’t really want to watch wrestling, I got too upset that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do”.
Chambers admitted that during Melbourne’s first lockdown, he’d been in a holding pattern, but his mindset did a complete u-turn.
“After the second wave hit, I said to myself ‘time to pull in my head in’ and I thought ‘what do I need to work on’ and ‘how am I going to get better’ for when we return”.
Like many wrestlers, the Airbender was a wrestling fan as a youngster and after a few years of Mixed Martial Arts, he discovered his athleticism and agility.
But, it wasn’t until he saw Kenny Omega vs Chris Jericho, at Wrestle Kingdom 12, did he consider using his natural ability to become a pro wrestler. Amazingly, it only took three months of training before Chambers had his first match.
Responding to a fan question from social media, Chambers was asked if his he was worried about being pigeon holed as “just a highflyer?”, his answer was resolute;
“I’m happy being a highflyer, that’s the style I fell in love with and that’s what I’ll continue to do until I can’t do it anymore, that’s the style that excites me”.
When asked about #MCW21, the Airbender has plenty in-store for the MCW faithful.
“When I come back, my style will be more diverse that anyone else’s and I’ve got some cool stuff planned”.
